BCS predictions: Another Year of Controversy

Right now Texas(7-0) is the number one team in the first BCS bowl standings to be released. As they should be. They just beat Oklahoma, then the number one team in the country, and Missouri(6-1) in back to back weeks. The longhorns look very strong so far this year averaging over 48 points a game and outscoring their opponent by over 30 points a game. With those statistics it is likely that you win every game. Texas has 2 big tests in the upcoming weeks with Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, both undefeated. The longhorns have a better team but could slip up against these schools.
Next in the standing is undefeated Alabama. A team led by former coach of then national champion LSU, Nick Saban. Alabama has a very young team and has already taken down SEC powerhouses Clemson and Georgia. If Alabama can hold off LSU in early November they should finish this season undefeated. Penn State is the number three team and is also undefeated. Last week it looked as if Penn State would fall to their rival Michigan on homecoming day. They came out sluggish and were behind at halftime. But I guess old Coach Paterno still has something in him because the Nittany Lions came out and blew out Michigan in the second half, taking the game 46-17. Penn State faces surging Ohio State next week in a game that seems to have National Championship implications. If Penn wins they should win out and have a good shot at the national championship, and Ohio State is looming with one loss looking to take down a top team and give themselves a chance at it.
Oklahoma and USC round out the top 5. Both these teams will need a loss out of the top 3 to advance to the National Championship. USC has clearly looked like the best team in the country besides one game. In five games USC has outscored their opponent 228-20 and most recently beat Washington 69-0. They appeared to have tripped up against Oregon State and maybe dashed their title hopes and lost 21-27. Since this loss USC has not given up a point in two games. Oklahoma has looked very impressive also this year putting up huge numbers but will only be able to get in to the title game with 2 of the top 3 teams losing.
Rose Bowl – Ohio State vs. USC
Orange Bowl – Florida State vs. Pittsburgh
Sugar Bowl – Alabama vs. Boise State
Fiesta Bowl – Oklahoma vs. Penn State
BCS title game – Texas vs. Florida
I think both Penn State and Alabama will fall. Penn State has played great this year but I don’t think they have the talent or size necessary to beat a hungry Ohio State team this week. Alabama is very talented and well coached but still very young. They could fall to LSU or later in their conference championship game. USC and Ohio State will both win out but due to Florida’s strength of schedule they should get the nod over them for the title game. Florida has big game experience and an incredible leader in Tim Tebow, expect the Gators to get their 2nd title in 3 years and of course a lot more upsets and controversy over who should play in the big game this year.
