New Facebook vs. Old Facebook

Talk to anyone who uses Facebook regularly and you will hear how awful the new Facebook is to human kind. You might ask what the difference is between the new Facebook and the old Facebook? My original opinion entailed that the old Facebook was without a doubt better than the new one. I think many people agree with me on this statement, however after using the new Facebook for about a month now, I have come to realize that change is a good thing.
The new Facebook has less clutter around its surface and more distinct areas to find certain information on certain pages. The old Facebook was lacking in this category. The search for friends is still easy because you can search them in the tool bar, conversely to find certain groups, photos or videos it has become much easier. In the old Facebook era, to look at a photo album in the past you would have to go to the person’s page and search for it. Now with the new and improved Facebook, photo album is an immediate option. Facebook has become more evolved and people friendly with its new design.
The new Facebook is much more high-tech than the old one, if you can find that possible. Since when can you send video messages and post them on a friend’s wall? The wall of someone’s Facebook page is basically the main attraction. Friends are allowed to write notes on your wall or send you funny applications, or now send video messages. Personally, the first video message I ever received was from my best friend who goes to Jacksonville University. I knew she was going to send it to me, nevertheless it meant so much more than a normal wall post. Cheesy?…maybe, but there was definitely something more. Hearing a voice is so much more pleasant than reading words. In my opinion, what else I find, “cool” is how any of your friends can leave a comment on your wall about a new friend, status update or photo. Believe it or not the new Facebook also works much faster than the old one. It is faster because of the filter systems it has acquired, and the clutter is gone. Have you noticed how you can edit your profile from your profile page? This is also new, and easier than going to your homepage to fix something. The new Facebook has been getting mixed reviews, yet in the end I believe everyone will see the change for the better and realize that the new facebook is the place to be.
Despite this overwhelming evidence it seems the majority of Facebook goers are still swinging towards the old Facebook. I strongly believe that if people took their time to investigate the issue, and truly understand what new Facebook has produced, they would comprehend that the Facebook editors and creators are doing well in keeping Facebook a “cutting edge” social media and networking site. Let’s be honest, those of you who have joined the bandwagon saying the old Facebook was better, where’s your proof? Have you researched your opinion well enough to back it up? I’m challenging you to find a reason why the new Facebook is so much worse than the old one. My research has changed my opinion, and I strongly believe that the new Facebook is a change for the better, however the best is yet to come.

Facebook had to change—classic case of technological determinism. With the widely popular use of mobile web devices (iPhone/iPod/blackberry, etc) traditional methods of displaying information were becoming less effective. Facebook saw this trend coming and was quick to act in order to stay ahead of the wave. With it’s facebook.app for iPhone/iPod paving the way for others, facebook decided to maintain continuity between its web version and handheld version. This is to help make the transition easier for those who would be switching media.
Secondly, the new facebook allows for an easier way to publish information about you…combining both the technology behind RSS feeds with the usability with twitter-like publishing. Information is key and facebook is simply trying to make information cleaner, easier to access, and more relevant.
To answer your question, my favorite thing with the facebook redesign is the removal of all of the distractions like fishpond, gifts, and other nonsense that cluttered the information that I was trying to get at.
Change is inevitable. Those who do not see change and adapt are those who become extinct.
