NYT Article: Becoming Screen Literate

Everywhere we look, we see screens. The other day I watched clips from a movie as I pumped gas into my car. The other night I saw a movie on the backseat of a plane. We will watch anywhere. Screens playing video pop up in the most unexpected places — like A.T.M. machines and supermarket checkout lines and tiny phones; some movie fans watch entire films in between calls. These ever-present screens have created an audience for very short moving pictures, as brief as three minutes, while cheap digital creation tools have empowered a new generation of filmmakers, who are rapidly filling up those screens. We are headed toward screen ubiquity.

I strongly agree with what Kevin Kelly expressed in this article. Personally, I think that technology has helped to mold me into the person I am today. Technology has changed the world similar to the invention of prints and the development of books and other reading materials. Although the invention of big-screen movies occurred a long time ago, the internet allows everyone to create their own movies and other works of art. Technology has allowed a larger variety of people to be able to express themselves in broader ways than just through reading.
In this article, Kelly explains how it is easier to read a book than write it, and easier to listen to a song than compose one. This statement was definitely true a few years ago, but since the discovery of new programs such as youtube, iMovie, and GarageBand, creating music and other ideas has become a lot easier. The invention of modern technology has definitely changed the world to a faster pace, and has allowed new people to express their ideas at ease.

Kevin Kelly lists countless tools and functions we use today in our visual technology. He is trying to convey the idea that just as books did hundreds of years ago, visual technology will change the culture of our societies. Both books and movies have gone through many developments and improvements in order to make them more useful. However, visual technology now completely overpowers books and other written materials, and it is still developing. No one can tell how far this visual revolution will go, but it is inevitable that it will take our societies to new technological heights.

Without the changes made in technology, the world would be a much different place. Screens make everyone’s life easier. It is more relevent to look up research on the internet then to look it up in a book. Who needs books anyways now? All books are now on screens either being on the internet or a hand-held electronic reader. Words on paper have become outdated. We are in a new generation. People need to realize that we are not going to degress but only move forward. It is time for everyone to understand the world’s technology or they will just be left in the dust.

I agree completely with Kevin Kelly’s article and his biews on the “new media” we have talked about countless times in class. I could relate with what Mr. Kelly was saying, especially in his examples; such as the screens that are so prominent in the world today. Only one decade ago people relied on books and magazines to get all of their information. Today, some people do not even have library cards. That is because more and more information can be found on the internet and even on television. The new wave of visual technology has helped start a new revolution, who knows what technology will be like in the future.

It is amazing the advancements made in technology over the last several years. Kevin Kelly makes many good points in his article about how technology has evolved over time and the affects it has had on society. The use of screens in our society is ridiculous, Kevin Kelly is correct when he says they are everywhere. I remember when I was little sites such as Youtube, and objects such as cell phones and iPods were still being created and discovered. Now walking down the street almost everyone has a cell phone in their hand, and they could be watching videos, listening to music, talking, or browsing the internet. These technologies and advancements all have an effect on how our society works and communicates. Communicating is much easier now than it was before things such as the internet, getting the word out about events, ideas and advancements is quick and easy nowadays. It is easy to see that we are not done developing our technologies and ways of communicating, it will be interesting to see what is coming in the near future.

Technology takes the world to higher levels. Technology makes life much easier and it also creates more forms of entertainment and communication. The world has become so technologically advanced that tasks that used to take months now only take hours. Simple things such as books have even become available on the internet. More people are starting to realize how much easier technology makes life. People are starting to manipulate technology to say what they want to say. Technology must be embraced instead of feared because it is important to move forward and advance.

Kevin Kelly lists some very significant changes in our society due to the advancements of technology. One example that comes to my mind when talking about screens being everywhere is the classroom. In almost every classroom a smart board can be found, which changes oral learning to visual learning. Technology is making this a visual world. When we want to find out information we don’t go to the library for a book we go to our laptops and use the internet. Technology is shaping our society. Almost everyone you see has some form of the iPod. I know I don’t leave home without mine! Personally, I’m excited to see what new developments come about in the future!

In the 21th centur, technology is improving. paper work become documentsin the computers, publish maganizes can be read online, stories can be filmed become videos. As Kevin Kelly is telling that everything is on the screen, which is exceedingly true from a cell phone, an ipod, a laptop, to the televisions. People now is living in the New media world, which makes the lives more convenient and success. From education, literature or history sometimes can be more easily to memorize while they are in the image form. Additionally, watching those films with friends families is an entertainment while spending time with each other. Furthermore, with the computers, we can be the characters in the films, and we can also record lives for memories. These screens and the technology will benefit on human’s lives not only in the present but also in the future.

Kevin Kelly depicts how books and written materials were used as the main tools for communication decades ago and how media technologies have been replaced nowadays. He compares words and images, telling that our society is revolved visually. The article describes how the technologies have improved to a certain point, how people are working through to be screen fluent, and how there are more room for advancement in the media technologies. I have personally witnessed wide development in digital technology. I’m not screen literate myself so when I watch movie clips, they surprise me how the moving images work and how much emotions and information they can convey. It is very true that visual images have taken over much of the written, printed materials. For me, and I believe for many other people as well, moving images help communication more than words sitting on paper. The advancements in technology definitely have contributed to create more useful communication tools. Still, there are more to go.

I agree with what Kevin Kelly wrote about in his article regarding technology and the 21st century as well as how much of an impact it has made. The new phenomena’s such as youtube, video cameras on cell phones, and the ability to download movies, television shows, and music videos directly to an iPod is truly a remarkable thing. In this age and culture however, although the screens and digital technology has become the norm, it is not rare to watch something on youtube that was recorded seconds before from a cell phone. In fact a fair amount of posts on the youtube site are just that, moments caught on film. Although all these advancements may provide entertainment and/or show the technological advances that are continuously being created one might step back and wonder what happened. For instance, Although the overwhelming amount of screen literacy may be positive for the production of things by easy access to printing, organizing, citing work it may also lead to another way that students could become lazy. At this point it is so easy for a student to not read a book that was assigned and go out and watch the movie instead. Or a student can just “google” the book’s essay topic and copy and paste an essay and hand it in under their own name. Yes, even more technology has been evolved to prevent that from happening but the problem still exists. Thus the question is, how beneficial is this new era of technology? However, in the end, convenience is close to the end all reason as to why the advancement of technology is the key to the shaping of the current culture. Between numerous developments of technology and conveniency, society is moving towards an age that revolves almost completely around visual aids and media on screens.

Kevin Kelly makes some very clear points regarding the photography and movie industry, and online video resources such as YouTube.com. The current generation relies on technology to function smoothly. Social networks such as Twitter and Facebook help create opportunities for people to view content that other people wish to share with the public. I myself am guilty of editing the photos that I have taken to achieve the maximum effect that I am looking for. The only reason for this is that I am not able to initially capture the essence of a particular scene. The advancements in the advertisement industry have played a major role in this pursuit of perfection way of thinking. Our generation sees these images in commercial and on billboards and upon trying to recreate them, find that it is nearly impossible. Technology enables anyone to create images that completely capture the essence of a particular scene. With the right equipment, and a little help from computers people are able to create inspiring images, providing more examples of how technology plays a key role in this generation’s thought process.

I agree with Keith Kelly’s article concerning the impact technology has had on the 21st century. The impact technology has made on the world today is miraculous. The impact technology has had on the modern world is similar to the impact the creation of prints and the creation of books had on the past. The world seems to revolve around screens and now we seem to get almost all our knowledge from screens even if its reading the news or researching past events. With the invention of cell phones and computers, it seems we have all lost a little privacy with everyone now being able to know what everyone is doing almost all the time. The advancement in technology has changed our society and will continue to change in the future.

As Kevin Kelly talks says, the culture of our generation is moving away from the traditional world of books, still pictures, and simple text. As he explicitly shows, it is hard to argue that this transformation in recieving information is not true with the growing popularity of Youtube, indie films, and other short-film technologies. Prior to the age of computers, iPhones, and other screen technologies, people relied on books, personal experiences, and television for information. Because almoste very book and television channel is a reliable source of information, it was never questioned what is fact and what is false. Now, there is no way to tell what online videos have been enhanced, edited, and manipulated and what ones contain actually real facts. Also, with the increasing use of videos to gain information, one does not have to analyze, question, or imagine what is taking place, they simply watch the video. Unlike videos, novels force the reader to process the words and imagine the setting described. They must make connections using their imagination instead of having the information fed to them through a video. I agree with Kevin Kelly on the takeover of screeens in everyday life, but like every new advancements, there are both positive and negative aspects, and we should look at the negative ones before completely changing our culture.

This article does a good job of describing how and why the internet has become our society’s primary method of communication. Technology has been the main factor in the shift of primary communication mode from speaking to literature to videos and pictures on the internet. I agree with the idea that videos are much easier to create as well as view today than they ever have been, especially with sites like Youtube and Timetube. Youtube organizes videos into several categories, and allows people to subscribe to specific users, which helps people find videos that they are interested in. Also, since the Internet is basically available to everyone, videos created today reach much larger audiences. The estimated 4 billion + new screens created each year is an incredible amount, and is a clear sign that this new method of communication will only become more important in the coming years and decades. During a college visit last weekend, me and my dad ate lunch in one of the dining halls. I looked around the room and saw several large screen tvs. While people often used to read the newspaper or a book during lunch, this is becoming increasingly rare as video takes over. The shift from text media to visual media will continue to occur in the coming years.

I can see why Kevin Kelly elaborates on how people are moving away from dull ways of learning like reading text books, looking at a photograph, or writing things down. Now we use new and more technologically advanced methods like using different tools on the internet like, videos, blogs, and websites loaded with information you can use at an instant. Although this is very convenient and up-to-date with all the advancements that have been going on, in a way, it is taking away some of the benefits that go along with learning the hard way. Or what some people may call the start from scratch way. People no longer need to use their imagination when they watch some video on the internet. Whereas before you would read a book on something and you would get a picture in your mind about what is going on while you read. Next, watching videos or reading someone else’s opinion on something can manipulate you into thinking that the way the person is explaining it is how something is which is not true at all. People should continue to use new technology but use books and other “old fashioned” resources still.

I agree with the article Keith Kelly has written about the significant changes that technology has placed on our society. Technology has advanced over the years, and it has impacted the whole entire world, which is astonishing. The screen that he writes about in this article is equivalent to books back in the day. When we want to go and research something, we do not go to the library and look through books, we immediately go onto a computer and use the Internet. The world seems to depend on screens for example we can use a computer or the T.V to look at the daily news. Technology is shaping our society into a new creation. An example of a screen that is used daily during the academic day is a projector onto a smart board. It is crazy how a simple screen has changed the world. The invention of the cell phone allows everyone to be able to contact whoever they want at whatever time. Technology is very interesting. Almost everyone carries around his or her cell phones or ipods around at all times, I know I do. I am very excited to see what new technology comes out into he future and how that can change society.

I would agree with this article in the fact that people today use screen technologies such as iPhones, Youtube, and more. But I think that it is just how our generation is today because we have always lived with computers and television and for the most part cell phones, well at least for high school and most college students. Yes everywhere we look there are screens and more screens but that’s just how we were brought up anyway. I don’t know about everyone else but even I still read the newspaper in the morning and so does everyone in my house rather than watching the news on television. It is just better. For the most part, I think Kevin Kelly is correct because yes today people are using technologies to do almost everything from reading books to interviews with people from across the country or even with people across the world.

I enjoyed reading Mr. Kelly’s article and broadened my view on his topic. It made me take technology for granted. He does a good job of explaining how technology has changed over the years. When I thought about what he said about there being television and computer screens everywhere I realized that he is right. It seems like they’re everywhere and growing in numbers. I have a blackberry phone, for example, and it’s amazing how I can receive emails on it and jump onto the internet whenever I like. He makes a good point about Youtube also. I probably have seen more Youtube videos lately then in the movie theater. They are a lot more convenient and free as well. I also liked what he had to say about google. it is crazy to be able to go on google and find the street view of any shop or house anywhere. I even found my house on it! It is actually a little weird to know that anyone can look up pictures of your home. That is just how far technology has come along. I believe that eventually all old types of communication and writing will be replaced by ones with screens.

I remember reading this blog back in December and completely agreeing. Our country has become obsessed with screen. We pick our TV by the size or quality of the screen, we pick cell phone with big touch screens, we buy ipod touches instead of nano (even though the nano has a better battery life). This constant use of technology as the main form of communication is a scary thought for some people but I believe that if we can balance technology and human interaction everything will be okay. I also believe that it is not necessarily that we are attracted or addicted to screen, I think it is more that America as a whole is attracted to flashy thing. I think Kevin Kelly touches on this when he discusses movies.

I completely agree with Kevin Kelly’s belief of the advancement of technology. As a nation, we are consumed by the fact that we can access the internet, movies, TV shows, and just about anything in the palm of your hand. I have watched part of the Scooby Doo movie by sitting in someone’s blind spot for fifteen minutes on the highway, the only reason I stopped watching was because I missed my exit. Even though technology is pulling us away from the traditional conventions of conversation, it does not completely obliterate these standards. Instead it enhances our ability to communicate faster, quicker, and more efficent. For example, after the telephone was invented, people of society did not cease speaking with others in person all together, it only made the process easier. The same goes for new technology like Twitter, Skype, and Facebook. Just because there is a new form of communication, doesn’t neccesarily mean old standards are dead.

Kevin Kelly’s article states the abruptly obvious fact that we are all consumed by screens. In simple terms, another screen often means another task performed quicker and easier. There’s nothing wrong with this. A small LCD display on a mouse to show battery, a digital clock, or a digital timer on an electric toothbrush, all serve a purpose. Could they be avoided – obviously, but when the addition of a small display can save time, no matter how much, why not? A second a day over the course of a lifetime adds up, combining multiple implementations throughout the course of a day saves even more time.
Still, despite the growing push toward digital, some things such as books remain favorable in their true form. Reading from an eReader, for many, remains an awkward experience they would rather avoid. But, with people scraping to save every penny nowadays, many still shift to eBooks considering just how much less expensive they are than printed copies.

I totally agree with Kevin Kelly’s article, Becoming Screen Literate. He shows how technology has dramatically advanced throughout the years. We are all consumed by the new, somewhat unnecessary technology. Some forms of technology is not needed, as Anton stated above me “the LCD display on the mouse to show battery”. Although it is not needed, people still buy it, because it makes their lives easier. Also, I agree with him when he says that screens are everywhere, and the amount of them are rapidly growing. This is just another sign that people have shifted away from traditional methods of things. For instance, instead of going and buying a newspaper, you can go online and read it there saving you the hassle of buying one. There is not much we can do to shift from this way of life as it rapidly grows. It seems that in the United States we always strive to have the newest things, and we cant do anything about it.

I believe that technology is necessary for the development of the world. Technology allows people to communicate and interact with each other. It at the same time makes life so much easier, by offering everyone with various ways to work on and take care of his or her tasks and businesses in a short mount of time. Also, the world has become so technologically advanced, for technology has provided everyone efficient ways to communicate with each other. Therefore, although it is true that technology has taken over a lot of books and printed materials, I believe that technology is necessary for the development of the world because it is definitely a good means to create more advanced and useful tools for communication around the world.
