People always say, “Allie, you are always smiling. How can you be so happy all of the time?” When I was thinking about what to write about, Ben Crenca, another WAMash contributor, joked about how I always smile, and that I should write about why I am so happy. From there, the idea grew and I decided to share with people not only why I smile so much, but why others should as well. There are lots of reasons to smile, not simply because you’re happy; in this article, I am going to give the 6 reasons why I believe smiling is important, and why people should smile more.
1. Kick back and Relax – While no one is sure of the exact number of muscles it takes to smile versus frown, studies show that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile. So relax your muscles, put on a happy face!
2. Don’t Worry, be Happy – Believe it or not, smiling relieves stress. Going along with the relaxation, smiling releases endorphins, which are neurotransmitters from the brain that reduce pain and stress. If you’re feeling overwhelmed about work, school, or anything really, a smile can go a long way to making you feel better.
3. You should do it, it’s Contagious – Ever heard that a yawn is contagious? So is a smile! A smile brightens up a room and creates a less intimidating environment, try it! I guarantee that if you smile at someone, they will smile right back.
4. Smiling Makes you Appreciate Everything More – Stop, smell the roses, and smile. Life can be difficult, it can be stressful, and sometimes it seems like nothing will go right, but life is also great. Maybe something as little as an extra cherry on your sundae brightens your day (if you don’t like cherries, just pretend for the sake of this article), or maybe you got into your top choice college, either way, there is always one thing, no matter how big or small, that makes a day special. Smile about it! It will make you appreciate your achievement or gift even more.
5. Let’s Face it, it’s got Appeal – Would you walk up to a person frowning while looking at the ground and start a conversation? No. What if that person were smiling? Smiling makes it easier to talk to a person because they seem more open and appealing. If you’re smiling, chances are you could be considered happy, fun, or energetic, which are good qualities to have. So if you want to meet a new person or just catch up with friends, slap a smile on your face and join the conversation!
6. Just…Because – Does there really have to be one specific reason to smile? There are 5 here, but this last one is just because it’s good for you, and for the people around you. Smile because you’re happy, smile because you want to, either way, it’s a great way to lift your spirits, and the ones of those around you.
