Top 5 Worst Songs to Hit #1 (2006 to 2008)

What is happening to music? As far as I’m concerned, the quality of music keeps declining. There was a time when music had real meaning, it was about true love, finding yourself, war, hope, and peace. Even sad songs had some good original morals. The music had soul, and the instruments alone were inspiring. But today all you hear when you turn on the radio is bad music that talks about sex and drugs, and music that just makes no sense. Here is my list of the top 5 worst songs from 2006 to 2008 that managed to hit number one on the Billboard Charts. (You may be wondering, why 2006-2008? My only reasoning for that is, it was necessary for some of those songs to be on this list.)
5.“Umbrella”- By: Rihanna (hit in 2007)
This song may be catchy, like all the others on this list, but if I hear “Umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh” one more time I am going to flip out. This song has decent lyrics and Rihanna actually has a very good voice. But the Umbrella part in the chorus must go! Every time she sings the chorus she says “eh” 15 times and “ella” 8 times. It is just too repetitive with the Umbrella part and gets very annoying. With the rate that they were playing this song on the radio stations I am surprised people didn’t get sick of it sooner.
4.“London Bridge”- By: Fergie (hit in 2006)
This song has essentially the same beat for the entire song and really, it gets old fast. Does anyone notice the awkward notes she hits? For this entire song all I can think is ‘Oh my god! London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down, London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady.’ There are parts in this song where you can’t even understand what she is saying. Now I realize that in a lot of mainstream music you can’t understand the singers, but that just proves my point the quality of music nowadays is drastically declining.
3.“Laffy Taffy”- By: D4L (hit in 2006)
Once again a song where you can’t understand them for half the song. Also, another candy analogy! There have been many other songs in the past few years that have the candy analogies. What happened to music like “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison? At least Morrison’s song refers to sex as “making love”, while D4L’s whole song is referring to having sex with girls because of the way their bodies look.
2.“Lollipop”- By: Lil Wayne (hit in 2008)
This song is disgusting. It wins number 2 just based on the facts that the lyrics are repulsive and have no value. This is not about being a feminist because I am not one. This is about not broadcasting your sex life for the entire world to hear about. Countless numbers of songs nowadays seem to have this same message. Since when did this become the norm, what has happened to our society? Why do we continue to support these singers who can’t seem to come up with anything better to sing about?
1.“Buy U a Drank”- By: T-Pain (hit in 2007)
Why do some artists find it necessary to sing about getting drunk and having sex? This song shares some facts that to me are a little bit personal. “We in the bed like ooo oo”… Excuse me, like what? It’s not like he even bothers to come up with words! He just says “like o”. And why is it that T-Pain feels obligated to tell the world about how he likes to get girls drunk, then have sex with them? This is the third out of the 5 songs on this list that lack quality simply by the fact that the entire song is about alcohol, sex, and drugs.
Now I will be truthful. Many of these songs are catchy and I admit that sometimes they can be quite amusing, but that does not mean they should make it to number one. What I don’t understand is why? How can these songs, that lack value compared to other amazing songs, reach number one? What is this music doing to our society? Better yet, what does this music say about our society?

I completely agree with this list! Well done! London Bridge is a good song, though, but all the others are repulsive and downright trashy. It’s downright disgusting that America listens to this garbage.
