Gaga About Gaga – A Boston Concert Review

As her lyrics from her song “Vanity” say, it was “midnight at the glamour show” last Monday night. Gaga’s fame has skyrocketed in the past year from desperately trying to get herself known to having thousands of fans barrage her at each of her concert locations. Her tour dubbed the “Fame Ball” is the first tour that she is headlining, however she has opened for the Pussycat Dolls and New Kids on the Block. On march 30th, her tour rolled in to the newly renovated House of Blues.

Boston was one of the few all-ages shows on the tour, but because it took place on a Monday night, not many people under 18 showed up. Everyone was anxiously waiting to see the newly crowned Princess of Pop, the one who believes she can save our culture with music and fashion.

The doors were scheduled to open at 7, and by 4:30 the line was already pretty substantial. It was a little bit drizzly but that didn’t stop a large number of people from wearing long blonde wigs or drawing eyeliner lightning bolts on their faces. Gaga has also become an icon for homosexuals much like Bette Midler back in her time, and it only added to the flamboyancy of the show.

Her opening acts included Cinema Bizarre, Boston natives Chester French, and The White Tie Affair. Cinema Bizarre was nothing special. They hail from Germany (however, each member decided to give themselves a Japanese name), and are based on a style and look called “visual kei”, which they couldn’t pull off. Chester French’s songs were moderately cute, helped by running across the stage and even doing so much as inviting a girl up to sing with them (which bombed because they aren’t well-known enough so the poor girl didn’t even know the words.) Lastly, The White Tie Affair performed, whose single “Candle (Sick and Tired)” has become popular recently. I happen to think it was the worst song they performed.

Then, finally, after keeping the audience waiting for 30-45 minuets, an artsy video featuring Lady Gaga as “Candy Warhol” started playing. She declared with a booming base as her background, “My name is Lady Gaga, and this is my Haus” (referring to the Haus of Gaga). The screen went up in flames, and there was the Lady in all her glory, amongst large moving metal pieces on a pedestal. The crowd immediately went crazy when the background from Paparazzi started to play.

Wasting no time, she jumped from one song to the next, adding in little bits and stories between songs about how she lost her voice the day before, and her manager told her they might have to cancel the show- to which the promptly replied, “F*ck off!”

To show off the fact that she doesn’t lip-sync, she boasted her immense vocal talents in a slowed down version of “Poker Face”, in which she banged on her piano and let out long, sweet, melodic notes. She also did a bit from an upcoming song she’s working on titled “Future Love”.

DJ Space Cowboy accompanied her, and played a few of her tracks while she went back stage to change. Her outfits went from a black and diamond studded dress, a dress made entirely of bubbles to match her piano, to a nude sparkly leotard (none of which covered her bubble bum). Her background dancers performed for most of the song, and needless to say she is quite picky about who gets to perform with her, so these were top-of-the-line dancers.

All in all, she is someone to be seen live. She can deliver and perform with vigor and excellence. She knows just how to make the crowd cheer her name, because there is nothing she wants to hear more than how much people love her. If you get the chance, I would absolutely recommend buying tickets ASAP- they sell out quickly, and it’s not something you’ll want to miss!
